, 380 words

Retail Week reached out to interview me for their long-running "My Retail Life" series. The interview is reproduced below.

My Retail Life, Aidan Fitzpatrick, IT director, Wiggle

RW

What was your first job in retailing?

Aidan

Web developer at a short-lasting dotcom start-up. We were trying to sell software.

RW

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

Aidan

Asos has built a strong brand.

I see its packages everywhere and I like its magazine and engagement with customers through social media. Next has also done some good stuff with connecting its advertising to the web.

RW

What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?

Aidan

Sometimes I just can’t resist getting into the details.

RW

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

Aidan

David Lethbridge - the founder of Confetti - who I worked with for several years. He got me into multichannel and was a great mentor.

RW

What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?

Aidan

If you are not careful multichannel can get a lot more complicated than it should be.

RW

What keeps you awake at night?

Aidan

The incredible growth we are seeing at Wiggle. It’s like a different business every six months.

RW

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Aidan

Seeing the team grow and providing an even better level of service as we go… and some of the bike rides.

RW

What’s your proudest achievement?

Aidan

Staying on top of some of the challenges at Wiggle. We have got nearly 10 times the servers we had nine months ago and we are getting a lot of new functionality out, too.

RW

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

Aidan

I might be playing rock banjo in a terrible band or doing something with private equity.

RW

What’s your favourite shop and why?

Aidan

I love Liberty. A good brand with beautiful product in a lovely building.

RW

What was your last purchase?

Aidan

A smashing three-piece suit from website A Suit That Fits.
